Haze situation in Thai North improves

BANGKOK, March 5 (TNA) - Haze has eased in northern Thai provinces although forest fires have continued in some areas, while local people in the Thai far South have been affected by a recent forest fire. In Chiang Mai Province, visibility improved on Thursday and the level of particulate matters was within the safe standard level of 120 micrograms per cubic meters, as they were latest measured at 77 micrograms per cubic meters at the Chiang Mai government complex. In adjacent Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Phrae and Phayao Provinces, the levels of particulate matters were also below 100 micrograms per cubic meter, while only in Nan Province, where the level of particulate matters remained harmful, exceeding the safe standard level of 120 micrograms per cubic meters. Jongkhlai Worapongsathorn, chief of Chiang Mai's natural resources and environment office, told reporters that the weather condition in his province has improved, thanks to Wednesday's downpours in the southern part of Lamphun with humidity and winds helping relieve haze. Jongkhlai said, however, that forest fires have continued in Chiang Mai, where there are now 10 hot spots in districts hit by frequent forest fires, including Mae Chaem and Chiang Dao. In Narathiwat Province in the Thai far South, firefighters have, meanwhile, controled the blaze only in a quarter of a rubber and palm plantations, as well as orchards which are burning in Su-ngai Kolok Sub-district of Su-ngai Kolok District. The fire, which not only damages local farmlands, but also causes haze affecting local people's health, has continued for a week, while strong winds and a water shortage are obstructing about 100 firefighters there.
