Health Insurance Accessible To Refugees In Iran

Tehran, Sept 30, IRNA – UNHCR, BAFIA & Asia Insurance Company signed a tripartite letter of mutual intent relating to the 3rd phase of the Health Insurance Scheme (HISE) for secondary and tertiary healthcare for refugees in Iran. The Health Insurance scheme complements UNHCR’s existing health interventions in Iran which includes; among these: - Primary Health Care (PHC) in which UNHCR has an agreement with the Ministry of Health and Medical Education to provide PHC services to refugees, consisting of vaccinations, antenatal care, maternal and child health and family planning - Community Integrated Social and Medical Assistance Program (CISAMAP) which is directly implemented by UNHCR and has, as part of its constitutive components, a medical assistance service to complement health insurance program and to increase outreach and assistance to vulnerable refugees, especially with regard to chronic health conditions. The Health Insurance scheme will be accessible to up to 210,000 vulnerable refugees who have met the UNHCR/BAFIA vulnerability criteria and are in critical financial status. It is estimated that 1,200 of these refugees will be in need of the insurance for five special diseases: hemophilia, thalassemia, renal failure, cancer and multiple sclerosis. UNHCR will cover the premium for the 210,000 vulnerable refugees. The non-vulnerable refugees can obtain health insurance according to ASIA insurance company’s regular tariffs. Host to the second largest refugee population in the world, the Islamic Republic of Iran holds some 882,000 registered Afghan and Iraqi refugees. /end
