Health Minister Reiterates Importance of Physical and Psychological Health

Doha, October 11 (QNA) - HE the Minister of Health Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani has reiterated the importance of physical and psychological as it constitutes a key part of Qatar National Mental Health Strategy. In a statement on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, HE the Health Minister said: "It is well known that good physical health is important for a full and happy life, but it's often overlooked that our psychological wellbeing is just as necessary." HE the Minister of Health Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani added: "Prevention is a key part of our strategy for Mental Health. We want to give people the tools to stay mentally fit as well as physically fit, so we can all enjoy vitality and success as individuals and families, and also collectively as a society. I encourage everyone to support World Mental Health Day by taking the time to learn how to care for their mind, as well as their body." October 10 marked World Mental Health Day, a global initiative to promote greater awareness of mental health issues. This worldwide day has special significance locally, with many groups supporting the vision of the Qatar National Mental Health Strategy by promoting good mental health and wellbeing. Mental health is about the way we think and feel and our ability to deal with everyday ups and downs. Good mental health is a sense of wellbeing, confidence and self-esteem that enables people to fully enjoy and participate in life, including work, education, leisure activities, family and social life. Activities will take place throughout the month of October around the theme: A happy, healthy life means caring for your body and mind. Inspired by the Qatar National Vision 2030, which recognizes that a healthy mind is as important as a healthy body, information will be shared about practical ways individuals and communities can influence their overall sense of wellbeing. The mind and the body are linked and therefore many of the things people can do to improve their physical health, such as sleeping sufficiently, exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet, are also effective in improving how people feel emotionally. For example, exercise not only strengthens our heart and lungs, but also releases chemicals in our brain that energize us, relieve stress and lift our mood. Stress management techniques, mindfulness, relaxation and spiritual practice can also be beneficial for coping with difficult situations and maintaining a positive outlook. Many organizations are celebrating World Mental Health Day by organizing a social activity that brings people together to enjoy each other's company, to share interests or develop new skills. This is a great way to contribute to peoples emotional wellbeing, as having a strong sense of connection to other people and our community promotes and protects our mental health and provides support during stressful times. Strong communities and healthy lifestyles can help prevent mental health issues, however, mental illness can affect anyone, at any time. The Supreme Council of Health encourages anyone who is experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, worry or stress that make it hard to cope with daily life, to seek help from a mental health trained professional as early as possible. Services are available through Primary Health Care Centers and Hamad Medical Corporation's Psychiatry Department. (QNA)
