Heavy rain, floods remain in many Thai areas

BANGKOK, October 18 (TNA) - Thailand's several areas have still been affected by heavy downpours and floods due to the large amount of rainwater. In Lampang province in the Thai North, main streets in the provincial center remained 20-40 centimeters under water on Friday morning due to persistent downpours overnight, with floods likely to then expand in the heart of the province. People in the Rang Nok locality of Sam Ngam district in Phichit province in the Lower Thai North have suffered from the second round of flooding, as Storm Nari has caused downpours there over the past few days and no more rainwater can flow into the overflowing Yom River. Run-offs from Sai Ngam district of Kamphaeng Phet province, also in the Lower Thai North, have worsened the flooding situation there, prompting provincial authorities to have asked the Royal Irrigation Department to divert water from the Yom River to the Nan River to relieve the flooding and to distribute about 1,000 bags of necessities to local flood victims. In Chon Buri province in the Thai East, floods have been receding in commercial areas of Phanat Nikhom district, but flooding levels are still waist-high and floodwater has been flowing to inundate Phan Thong district. The floodwater has, however, been moving towards the sea through the Amata Nakorn Industrial Estate, where workers are pumping water out of its compound. In Bang Sombun Sub-district of Nakhon Nayok province in the central region has been inundated due to overflows from Prachin Buri, Bang Pakong and Nakhon Nayok Rivers, where currents broke through floodwalls in some areas. In Bangkok, passenger boats in the Saen Saep Canal have resumed their services, as the water in the canal has returned to its normal level, after a boat, hitting the pier of the Thep Leela Temple and sinking in the canal on Thursday evening, has already been retrieved.
