Home, Foreign Ministries To Hold Talks Over Illegal Immigrants

KUALA LUMPUR, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Home Ministry and Foreign Ministry are to hold talks soon with representatives from Myanmar and Bangladesh on the influx of illegal immigrants from the two countries, Deputy Home Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said Thursday. The missions of other countries would also be involved in the discussions to find ways to send back these illegal immigrants, he said. "These illegal immigrants will pose a burden to our country. They have caused concern among the people," he told a news conference after an excellence service awards event at the Kuala Lumpur Police headquarters here. Wan Junaidi's statement comes in the wake of the arrival to Langkawi by boat last Sunday of 1,158 Bangladesh nationals and the Rohingya community in Myanmar. It has been reported that between 5,000 and 6,000 more Bangladesh nationals and Rohingya are waiting for an opportune time to set sail for Malaysia. Wan Junaidi said measures had been taken to step up patrols and control in the waters along the country's border with Thailand to prevent more illegal immigrants from entering Malaysia. He said that besides the police and armed forces, the waters of the country would be monitored by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Immigration Department and People's Volunteer Corps (Rela). He also said that measures would be taken to prevent the entry of illegal immigrants over the land route. -- BERNAMA
