"I Will Never Betray The People" -PM Najib

SEMENYIH (Selangor, Malaysia), July 6 (Bernama) -- Najib Razak has reiterated that as an elected prime minister, he would never betray the people. Najib said he would also never allow foreign elements to threaten and topple the leadership of United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia's largest political party and the National Front (Barisan Nasional or BN) coalition which have been chosen by the people to administer the country to suit their own agendas. "This is my promise," he said at the "Iftar Rakyat Negeri Selangor Bersama Perdana Menteri" breaking-of-the-fast event at the Bandar Rinching Mosque here Sunday. Najib said he had become the victim of relentless attacks on social media lately including accusations that he had embezzled money. "In the last couple of days, they have come up with all kinds of news. I have become the victim of their relentless attacks, even accusing me of embezzling a huge amount of money. "I am thankful because many have stated they do not believe this (that he embezzled money," he said. Najib also said the opposition had used the social media to play up the issue to change the perception of the people towards the government and BN leaders. He said that the social media these days was no longer seeking for the truth but disseminating the latest news regardless of its accuracy and authenticity of the reports published. "The goal is not to reveal the truth but to change people's perception towards the government and leaders. "This does not help to cultivate the people's minds in order for them to think with maturity, fill the minds with facts but instead, they thrive by changing perceptions. That is their goal. With negative public perceptions, they may increase votes during the election," he said. He cited the 13th general election when the opposition spread rumours saying that BN brought in 40,000 phantom voters from Bangladesh. "Unfortunately, many believed the rumours. If we want to bring in 40,000 voters, we need 1,000 jumbo aircraft as a jumbo jet can only accommodate 400 passengers," he said. About 2,000 people attended the event. Also present were the Prime Minister's wife Rosmah Mansor and Selangor UMNO chairman Noh Omar. (photoBERNAMA) -- BERNAMA
