IGP Wants M'sians To See Importance Of Sedition Act In Light Of Paris Terror Attack

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 12 (Bernama) -- Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has advised Malaysians to view the importance of retaining the Sedition Act 1948 in light of the bloody attack in Paris, France on Wednesday. "Learn lessons from the Paris incident. That is why we need the Sedition Act and @PDRMsia will not allow religious inciters (to cause problems)," he said in his Twitter page. Khalid said laws like the Sedition Act could enable police to stem early, acts of extremism by extremist groups. "Paris attack – laws like the Sedition Act will surely help @PDRMsia nip the problem in the bud before it escalates. Think before saying," he said. Khalid also advised the people of this country to be careful so as not to make comments that touch on the sensitivities of any quarters. The Paris terror attack went on for three days after a group of armed and masked individuals fired shots at the Charlie Hebdo newspaper office where 12 people were killed and three others injured. Khalid also said on his Twitter page that Amedy Coulibaly and his wife Hayat Baumeddiene who held several hostages at a supermarket on Friday, had never entered Malaysia as claimed by some foreign media. He said checks at @PDRMsia showed that Amedy Coulibaly, who was shot dead in Paris, and his wife Hayat Baumeddiene had not entered M'sia. Boumeddiene, however, managed to escape during an exchange of fire between the attackers and French police. Foreign media have reported that the couple had holidayed in Malaysia but did not state when. The couple was reported to have demanded the release two brothers Cherif Kouachi, 32, and Said Kouachi, 34, who had attacked the Charlie Hebdo office that left 12 people dead. -- BERNAMA
