IIUM Launches Mahabbah Food Programme To Help Needy Student

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) on Friday launched a Mahabbah Food Programme, organised by the office of Deputy Rector (Student Affairs) aimed at assisting needy students. The relief fund was launched by IIUM President Dr Rais Yatim at the university, here. The Deputy Rector (Student Affairs) Prof Dr Mizan Hitam said, each needy students would received a daily coupon or food voucher worth RM3 to RM10 (72 cents to US$2.40) to buy food. "No terms and conditions are imposed on the eligible students via Students' Representative Council either at the college, lecture or faculty. This is an on-going programme to ensure they receive aid," he told reporters after the launching of the programme. Mizan said UIAM had allocated RM10,000 (US$2,403) per month to ensure the success of the programme which targeted over 200 local and foreign students. In another development, IIUM had offered Orang Asli (aboriginal people) twins to further their studies in the IIUM Foundation Centre as a result of the mahabbah programme being carried out in the Orang Asli settlement area in Gombak, near here last year. The twins from four siblings, Amelia Ahmad and Amelina, when met by reporters said they were proud to be the first two Orang Asli students to have received the financial aid throughout their studies at the university. "We thanked IIUM for offering us financial assistance after we received excellent results in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination (Malaysian Certificate of Education)," said Amelina who is taking IIUM Science Foundation programme with her twin. -- BERNAMA
