Ilham Aliyev: Positions of Azerbaijan, Vietnam coincide on many issues

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 14 Trend: President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev has expressed confidence that the visit of Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang to Baku is an important stage in the development of Vietnamese-Azerbaijani relations, АzTV state TV channel of Azerbaijan reported. “We attach great importance to your visit,” President Aliyev said during the joint press conference with Truong Tan Sang May 14. “The reciprocal visits throughout the year show that the relations between the two countries are intensive.” The head of state added that broad discussions have been held on bilateral relations in various spheres today. “We once again became convinced that the positions of the two countries coincide on many issues,” said President Aliyev. “Currently, the political relations are at a very high level and the reciprocal visits prove that.” At the same time, the two countries successfully cooperate within international organizations, said the president. “We support each other.” “Following today’s negotiations, we decided to support each other in all international organizations in the future as well,” Ilham Aliyev said, adding that it is a very important issue, since it clearly shows the high level of bilateral relations. He also said there was an exchange of views on regional security issues. “I informed Vietnam’s president on the developments taking place in the region,” said the president. “I noted that the main issue of the regional security is the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.” “Unfortunately, this issue has remained unresolved for many years,” said President Aliyev. “Despite that the UN Security Council adopted four resolutions on an unconditional withdrawal of Armenian armed forces from Azerbaijan’s territories, unfortunately, Armenia ignores that, doesn’t fulfil those resolutions and continues the occupation.” He noted that as a result of the occupation and ethnic cleansing, over one million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs in their native lands. “A policy of ethnic cleansing was carried out against us. Some 20 percent of our territories are still under occupation,” said the president. He reminded that most international organizations expressed their fair position on this issue. The president said the UN, the UN Security Council, OSCE, European Parliament, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the Non-Aligned Movement – all these respected organizations, supporting Azerbaijan’s just cause, took appropriate decisions and adopted appropriate resolutions. “This issue and all other issues should be resolved on the basis of international law,” he added. President Aliyev further said the territorial integrity of a state is a fundamental principle of international law. “International community should have a single approach to this issue, it should not allow discrimination, and the territorial integrity of all the countries should be regulated on the basis of a single approach,” said Azerbaijan’s president.
