Indonesia Lauded For Contributions In Supporting International Atomic Energy Agency

LONDON, May 29 (Antara) - Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano lauded Indonesia's important role and various contributions in supporting the performance of the agency. Indonesia has supported the agency through the transfer of nuclear technology to other nations in the region, among developing countries under the South-South cooperation framework through the Regional Capacity Building Initiative program and assistance for the renovation of the IAEA laboratory in Seibersdorf, Austria. He praised Indonesia while receiving Indonesian Ambassador to Vienna Darmansjah Djumala, as permanent representative of the country, who was accredited to the IAEA after submitting his credentials, Third Secretary of Political Function of the Indonesian Embassy in Vienna Reski Kurnia Ilahi informed Antara London on Saturday. At the event, Djumala conveyed the need for Indonesia and the IAEA to continue improving cooperation, especially in the field of application of nuclear science and technology to support development programs, especially in sectors whose benefits can be directly enjoyed by the public, such as agriculture, health, irradiation technology, and tsunami and natural disaster mitigation. In addition, he emphasized the importance of synergy between Indonesia and IAEA and improving public awareness on the utilization of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes, so in future, the products produced through nuclear science and technology, such as food and agriculture products, are not only scientifically proven but also competitive in the markets. Thus, the global community will enjoy the benefits of the products produced through the use of nuclear science and technology. This was the goal of grounded diplomacy and multilateral cooperation. Amano warmly welcomed the arrival of Indonesian Ambassador Djumala in Vienna and expressed IAEA's readiness to enhance cooperation with Indonesia in the field of application of nuclear science and technology for boosting development. The idea was believed to be in line with IAEA's mission to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals. As an independent organization built on July 29, 1957, the IAEA aims to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy and counteract the use of energy for military purposes. The IAEA serves as an intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation on peaceful use of nuclear technology and power around the world. The IAEA Secretariat, located in Vienna, Austria, has 168 countries. The Indonesian Embassy in Vienna has an important role in realizing the cooperation priority as the embassy is also tasked with boosting bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the utilization of nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes and nuclear disarmament for global peace.
