Indonesian Embassy In Madrid Issues Warning After Barcelona's Van Attack

JAKARTA, Aug 18 (Antara) - The Indonesian Embassy in Madrid, Spain warned Indonesian citizens in Spain to exercise caution following a deadly van attack killing a 13 people and injuring 50 others in Barcelona on Thursday evening. A travel advice issued by the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid on Thursday urged any Indonesians citizens in Spain, especially in Barcelona, or those who are going to visit Spain to be on alert and cautious following the van attack. Prior to their travel in Spain, Indonesian citizens are also urged to follow the current situation in their travel destination in Spain and to avoid crowded places. The embassy also urged Indonesian citizens in Spain to always bring their ID when they are outside their houses. Thirteen people were killed and at least 50 other were injured following a terror attack in the city of Barcelona on Thursday afternoon. Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated here on Friday that there was no report of any Indonesians among the victims of the attack. The attack happened at around 17:00 hours local time when a man, described as slim and aged in his mid-20's drove a white van at high speed for several hundred meters onto Barcelona's famous Las Ramblas tourist area, attempting to hit as many people as possible. Witnesses described seeing a white van speeding along the pedestrian area, deliberately targeting people, knocking many to the floor and sending others fleeing for cover in shops and cafes. Spanish police have described it as a terror attack. Police also confirmed they have arrested a man in connection with the attack. The man who drove van into crowd was identified by Spanish media as Driss Oukabir. Local media also reported that one of Barcelona terror attackers died in fire exchange with police. Las Ramblas is popular with tourists because of its market stalls, bars and restaurants.
