Indonesian Ulema Council Calls For Respect For Election Dispute's Verdict

Solo, C Java, Aug 21 (Antara) - Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Din Syamsudin has called on the public to respect and accept whatever verdict is handed down by the Constitutional Court (MK) on the 2014 presidential election dispute. "We have to prove that we are guided by our Constitution, which is the foundation of our way of life in this country," said Din here on Thursday. According to Din, the Constitutional Court is the guardian of the Indonesian Constitution, and whatever verdict it has arrived at is final and binding. "There is no need to be angry. Nobody needs to feel as if they have won or lost. We don`t have to be divided as a nation," stated Din. He suggested related parties should reconcile and cooperate to build a better future for Indonesia. On July 22, the General Elections Commission officially announced that the Jokowi-JK pair had won the 2014 presidential election. The Jokowi-JK pair received 53.15 percent of the votes, while the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa pair garnered 46.85 percent of the votes. However, Prabowo had rejected the result, alleging massive fraud during the elections, and announced his withdrawal from the election process. On July 25, the Prabowo-Hatta pair filed a lawsuit at the MK, challenging the presidential election result. By law, the MK must issue a verdict no later than August 21, 2014.
