Indonesia's Police HQ In Pekanbaru Attacked

By Mohd Shukri Ishak JAKARTA, May 17 (Bernama) -- Four men travelling in a multi-purpose vehicle attacked the police headquarters in Pekanbaru, Riau, Wednesday morning, believed to be linked to a series of terrorist attacks since last Sunday. In the 9am (local time) incident, the suspects rammed their Toyota Avanza straight into the gate of the police headquarters, killing a policeman on duty and injuring two journalists. According to Riau police spokesman, Sunarto, the four suspects were later shot dead by police. Indonesian media reported that the two journalists, each from MNC TV and TVONE, were at the entrance of the police headquarters to cover a press conference regarding a drug case when they were hit by the suspects’ vehicle. They are now receiving treatment at the Bhayangkara Hospital. On May 13, a married couple and their four children separately carried out attacks on three churches in Surabaya by blowing themselves up. On May 14, the Surabaya police headquarters was also attacked by a suicide bomber. In both the May 13 and 14 incidents, 25 people were reported killed including the suicide bombers, police personnel and members of the public, while 51 others were reported injured. The Malaysian Embassy in Indonesia advised Malaysians in Indonesia to be more careful and not to visit places at high risk of terror attacks. -- BERNAMA
