Innovative technology used in helping search for MH370

BANGKOK, March 15 (TNA) - As the search and rescue operation have continues for a missing Malaysia Airlines (MAS) plane, Flight MH370, which has disappeared since last Saturday morning, an innovative information technology (IT) has been adopted internationally in order to enable people worldwide to help locate the ill-fated aircraft. Despite efforts given by about 10 countries, including Thailand, and nearly 100 aircraft and warships being employed in searching for the commercial aircraft in the Malaysian Peninsula, the South China Sea and the Andaman Sea, nothing has been found so far. Pictures shown by WashingtonPost.com have displayed that it is extremely difficult to find an aircraft with a total length of 60 metres in the middle of an ocean with a total area of over 400,000 square kilometres. After realising the difficulty, satellite technology has then been used for the first time by DigitalGlobe Company, whose pictures taken recently around an area connecting between the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand were published in the website so that people worldwide could help locate the missing aircraft with their eyes. Watchers who have spotted any suspicious pictures could urgently inform on the Tomnod.com website. The website operator said more than two million viewers have already given nearly 700,000 notifications over the past few days. New areas covering over 24,000 square kilometres have been inserted in a bid to find the missing commercial airliner. The ongoing attempt to locate the aircraft through an online technology is considered as "crowd sourcing" to help find the mysterious missing MH370. The last sighting of the aircraft on civilian radar screens came shortly before 1:30am last Saturday, less than an hour after its take-off. The missing MAS flight was flying as scheduled across the mouth of the Gulf of Thailand on the eastern side of the Malaysian Peninsular, heading toward Beijing. (TNA)
