Interior minister: Iran pioneer in anti-drug fight

Orumieh, Aug 19, IRNA – Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said that the Islamic Republic of Iran spearheads fighting drug trafficking. 'Islamic Iran today leads the countries that confront drug trafficking in the world and this is rooted in religious beliefs and humanitarian attitude of the Iranian officials,' Rahmani Fazli said, addressing a seminar on prevention of addiction and socializing the combat against drug trafficking in the city of Orumieh, Northwestern Iran, on Wednesday. The Iranian interior minister noted that most of the discoveries in the field of narcotics take place in Iran and the highest human losses and the highest efforts in fighting drug trafficking takes place in Iran. He noted that a sum of 570 tons of narcotics has been discovered and seized in Iran last year preventing the transit of the same amount of illicit drugs to the European countries. 'We have had 20 percent increase in discovery of narcotics in the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 21-July 22) which shows Iran's insistence on campaign against drug trafficking,' Rahmani Fazli added. He pointed out that Sistan and Balouchestan, Kerman, Hormuzgan and West Azarbaijan provinces are prioritized in the anti-drug campaign.
