International conference held to help Bangkok become reading metropolis

BANGKOK, April 21 (TNA) - Representatives from 89 pro-reading organisations from and 17 member nations of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) on Sunday attended a meeting in the Thai capital and discussed ways to help make Bangkok achieving the World Book Capital for 2013, designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Bangkok governor Mom Rajawongse Sukhumbhand Paribatra said in the opening speech entitled ‘Future of Reading, Reading for Future’ that Bangkokians realise the significance of book reading which could improve their livelihood. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have in the past two or three years cooperated with several organisations in preparing projects encouraging people to love reading books, said Mom Rajawongse Sukhumbhand, adding that the conference will mark the capital’s effort to become the reading metropolis. Bangkok will officially receive the title on Monday. The BMA has plans to implement a few projects including a cartoon library, a book museum and increase the number of community libraries in the capital. These projects are due to complete before June 2014. (TNA)
