Iran always playing role in promoting global peace: UN official

Yazd, Sept 30, IRNA -- Director of the United Nations Information Center Maria Dotsenko said on Saturday that since the establishment of the United Nation, Iran has always played a crucial role in promoting peace, friendship and dialogue across the world. Addressing inaugural ceremony of Exhibition of Photo and Historic Documents on Iran-UN cooperation late Saturday, he added that one of the initiatives of Iran was Dialogue among Civilizations which was supported by the United Nations General Assembly, as the year 2001 was designated as the ‘Year of Dialogue among Civilizations’. Among other initiatives of Iran was President Hassan Rouhani’s proposal ‘World Against Violence and Extremism’ which was also supported by the United Nations General Assembly, she said. In June 2018, Iran was selected as one of the main six pillars of the United Nations in UN General Assembly’s Economy and Social Council, she said. As to the ongoing exhibition, she said that the event organized by Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) and Foreign Ministry indicates 72-year cooperation between Iran and the United Nations. Iran is among the first member states of the United Nations which called on the organization to set up information center in Tehran in 1950, Dotsenko said. The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization tasked with promoting international co-operation and to create and maintain international order. A replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, the organization was established on 24 October 1945 after World War II with the aim of preventing another such conflict. At its founding, the UN had 51 member states; there are now 193. 8072**1396 Follow us on Twitter @IrnaEnglish
