Iran Assumes Chairmanship Of NAM In UNESCO

Paris, Oct 24, IRNA – Iran assumed chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) group countries in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In a meeting here in the headquarters of UNESCO with NAM member countreis, the chairmanship of the group was transferred from Egyptian Ambassador and Permanent Representative in the organization Mohamed Sameh Amr to Iran Ambassador and Permanent Representative Mohammad Reza Majidi. Referring to NAM activities in the UNESCO during Egypt chairmanship, Majidi appreciated efforts of his Egyptian counterpart. He expressed hope that in cooperation with all member states Iran can take suitable steps in direction of high goals of the NAM and interests of member states. Majidi also expressed hope that by using valuable experiences of the movement in the past and its current abilities, the group can achieve great goals such as fight against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, apartheid, hegemonic powers, foreign interference, invasion, and occupation. Underlining principle of the NAM such as national sovereignty of the countries, equality among governments, territorial integrity of the countries and non-interfering policy, Majidi reminded that in the framework of the UNESCO, adopting necessary policy in direction of maintaining peace, public promotion for settling international disputes in a peaceful and justify manner is possible. He added that world currently needs peace, equality and constructive cooperation more than any other time. Referring to the UNESCO Charter, Majidi said peace should first emerge in the minds of people and then find an outside emergence./end
