Iran, big absentee in world competition in halal products

Tehran, Nov 18, IRNA – The world market of halal products with regard to the potentials and capacities available is marching towards allocation of 20% of the entire world trade in foodstuffs to itself. According to statistics available, the turnover of halal products in the world is $1.3 trillion and the value of its related plants and industries stands at about $2.3 trillion. In recent years this foodstuff brand has been presented by the Islamic countries to the world and has been warmly welcomed by non-Islamic countries. Halal is referred to foodstuffs that are allowed to be consumed according to Islam. Halal also refers to a collection of brands that are printed on the foodstuffs. This brand has been taken from the meaning of halal foodstuffs which are allowed in Islam. Among Muslim countries Malaysia is a pioneer in the field of halal foodstuffs and Iran which is one of the 15 member countries enjoys proper potential to use such an opportunity. But, according to the officials, the turnover in trade of halal foodstuff in 2006 in the Muslim world amounted to $150 billion of which Iran’s share whose population counts for 5 to 6 percent of the Muslim world stood at $320 million which is very meager. Deputy Chief of Iran Research Organization for Science and Technology (IROST) Mahmoud Molanejad believes that Iran has so far not been able to obtain an outstanding share of the world trade of halal products. He said Thailand as a non-Muslim country is one of the biggest centers for production, processing and presenting of halal products in the world. It claims to be turned into the largest kitchen of the world and for reaching this goal has targeted consumer markets of halal products. Currently 200 Thai plants have changed their application and entered into the market for halal foodstuffs while 200 other factories are applying for entry into this world market. Regretting Iran’s absence in the world competitions in halal products, Molanejad said unfortunately Iran holds no share of this important market, adding that movements such as operation of Iran National and Regional Center for Halal Technology can be considered a promising step in this direction./end
