Iran expects Western governments to remain committed to their obligations

Tehran, Dec 15, IRNA – Senior Iranian member of parliament Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Sunday that the Western governments are expected to remain committed to what they have undertaken due to the nuclear deal struck in Geneva. In a meeting with the head of the visiting EU delegation for relations with Iran, Tarja Cronberg, Boroujerdi said that imposition of new US anti-Iran sanctions was a violation of Geneva agreements signifying that the United States is not reliable. Referring to the strategic position of Iran in the region and the world, Boroujerdi said that resistance to the bullying powers makes up for the backbone of Iranian political structure. On the issue of terrorism in the region, Boroujerdi said the Islamic Republic of Iran has been one of the main victims of terrorism in the last three decades, calling for efforts to address this global concern. He further said that double-standard policies adopted by certain world powers towards terrorism is not acceptable. Boroujerdi, who is the head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said Iran is opposed to the presence of foreign forces in the region and believes that the Syrian people should be given the chance to determine their own political fate. The head of the EP delegation, for her part, expressed satisfaction over her visit to Iran in the current juncture, saying the visit helps a lot to discover realities about Iran. Cronberg said that such visits could pave the way for expansion of Iran-Europe ties in political, economic, trade and cultural areas. She expressed hope that the recent nuclear agreement between Iran and G5+1 would yield good results. The EP envoy further said that continuation of such coming and goings between Iranian and European officials would help remove the misunderstandings in terms of human rights issues. The EP delegation arrived in Tehran on Friday for a six-day visit.
