Iran Opposes Ban On Smugglers Capital Punishment

Tehran, March 18, IRNA – Minsiter of Interior Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli said on Tuesday that during a recent meeting on illegal drugs held in Vienna, Iran criticized abolition of capital punishment for illegal drugs smugglers. The 57th session of the Commission of Narcotic Drugs was held in the Austrian capital on March 13-14. Rahmani Fazli represented Iran in the event. Commenting on the achievements of the gathering, Fazli said Iran also opposed to legalization of comsumption of several kinds of narcotic drugs. “We also opposed a statement issued by some European states on abolition of the capital punishment for drugs smugglers,” said the minister. He said smugglers are not just involved in drugs trafficking but are also engaged in armed sruggles, illegal border crossing, rape, murder, money laundering and terrorist activities. He added that the final decision on abolition of execution of smugglers would be made in the Commission of Narcotic Drugs meeting in 2016./end
