Iran Science Network wins WSIS Award

Tehran, April 9, IRNA - International Telecommunication Union (ITU) announced that the National Scientific Network of Iran’s project has won the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Award among six national projects. Among the 90 projects of information and communication technology worldwide that competed for this award in 2019, Iran's Scientific Network is the only Iranian company that won the WSIS Award. Minister of Communications and Information Technology Mohammad Javad Azari-Jahromi who also attended the event in a message released in his twitter account lauded the victory and described it as a success over sanctions. The Scientific Network of Iran, as the first public-private partnership (PPP) project between universities, research centers, educational centers, seminaries and libraries, is a national research and education network that provides specialized services to support the needs of research and education communities as the infrastructure of the Senior Document, as a comprehensive scientific map of the country. In this year's WSIS Award, more than 1,100 projects in 18 groups were submitted to be evaluated and more than 2 million people voted for it which finally 90 of these projects in 18 groups reached the second phase. The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a two-phase United Nations-sponsored summit on information, communication and, in broad terms, the information society that took place in 2003 in Geneva and in 2005 in Tunis. One of its chief aims was to bridge the global digital divide separating rich countries from poor countries by spreading access to the Internet in the developing world.
