Iranian Female Scientist Wins UNESCO Award Of MAB

Tehran, June 19, IRNA – An Iranian woman scientist was named as one of the six winners of UNESCO Award of ˈYoung Scientist, Man and Biosphere (MAB) in 2014. According to UNESCO National Commission-Iran, the winners were announced in MAB International Coordination Council Meeting held on June 10-13 in Sweden. Iranian young scientist Mona Pourzadi has been declared as one of the six winners of MAB in 2014. Her proposed project focused on replacement of forest fuel sources with renewable energies in Arasbaran Reserves. Commenting on her selection of the topic for research, she said that since Arasbaran forests are considered one of the significant reserves of Iran, protecting and maintaining the national heritage as one of the main centers of biodiversity in the international level are among the major objectives in line with sustainable development. Pourzadi, currently a doctorate student, further noted that Arasbaran Forests is one of the biosphere reserves registered by UNESCO. Since inhabitants in the vicinity of Arasbaran Forests procure a main portion of their fuel needs from the woods, replacing firewood with renewable energies will greatly contribute to the protection of the forests. With the aim of encouraging young scientists from developing countries to study about issues related to biosphere reserves, Natural Resources, biodiversity, and promotion of information and experience exchange among scientists of young generation, UNESCO is presenting an award under the title of ˈYong Scientist; Man and Biosphereˈ every year./end
