Iranian Wins UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea Prize

Tehran, Aug 27, IRNA - The UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in Life Sciences for 2014-15 was awarded jointly to Hossein Baharvand and two scientists from other UNESCO member-states. The prize which includes a medal, honorable diploma and $300,000, will be divided among the laureates. Baharvand received his BS in biology from Shiraz University in 1994. He obtained his MS and PhD in biology from Shahid Beheshti and Kharazmi universities (formerly named Tarbiat Moallem University) in 1996 and 2004 respectively. He is the head of the stem cell research center affiliated to Royan Institute. The purpose of this prize is to reward projects and activities of an individual, individuals, institutions, other entities or non-governmental organizations for scientific research in life sciences leading to improvement in the quality of human life. The objectives of the prize are related to the central function of UNESCO’s program to encourage research and the setting up and further development of networks of centers of excellence in the life sciences. The prize winner/s, maximum three, having made a significant research contribution to the life sciences are selected by the director general of UNESCO on the basis of the assessments and recommendations made by an international jury.
