Iran's Navy to beef up presence in int'l waters: Commander

Tehran, May 19, IRNA – Commander of Iran's Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said on Tuesday that the force plans to promote its presence in international waters. Talking to IRNA, he said, 'Thanks to passage of commercial ships, we have interests in Gulf of Eden, we should maintain security of the ships.' Commenting on the objectives of Iran for its presence in free waters, Sayyari said that Navy has been tasked by the Supreme Leader to be present in world free waters. 'We are a nation seeking peace and we do not favor aggression and invasion on other countries' borders, but since free waters belong to all in the world, we will be present in them,' he said. Referring to the significance of north of Indian Ocean, he said in addition to its geopolitical and strategic importance, it is of significance for Iran and the world in terms of trade because over one third of international trade is carried out in the region. More than 90 percent of Iran's exports are conducted via sea, northern Indian Ocean is of special significance for the country, the commander said. Sayyari further noted that Iranian fleets are present in other international waters including India, Sri Lanka, Indonesian Islands, Malacca Strait, Pacific Ocean, Suez Canal, Mediterranean Sea and northern Indian Ocean. Noting that presence in international free waters will bring national pride, he added that Iran is a powerful country with a great nation, which should attend global free waters.
