Iraqi House Speaker Meets With Senior French Official

BAGHDAD / NINA / Iraqi House Speaker, Osama El-Nujaifi discussed, in his office in Baghdad, with Jean- Francois Gerald, head of the Middle East in the French Foreign Ministry, parliamentary elections and the general situation in Iraq, especially the transitional stages of the democratic system and human rights. A statement from the Media Office of the President of the House of Representatives cited that " the two sides agreed, during the meeting today, on the importance of the electoral process in Iraq as a way to the continuation of the political process and to promote national unity and re- correcting the mistakes in the process of democratic transition ." The statement added : the meeting also discussed the security file, especially the crisis in Anbar and the suffering of the population due to the shelling and displacement . For his part, Nujaifi, according to the statement, confirmed " the need to hold elections on schedule , pointing at the same time, to the importance of the existence of the regulatory side, both domestically and internationally to follow the progress of the election process properly and transparently. Gerald expressed, during the meeting, which was attended by the French ambassador in Baghdad, Deni Goyer " his country's desire to strengthen relations with Iraq and to contribute to the efforts to combat terrorism by equipment and expertise . / End
