Iris scan to be applied for verification of migrant workers in Thailand

BANGKOK, March 9 (TNA) - Thai authorities are considering to apply the iris scan system for the official nationality verification of migrant workers to speed up the process, set to be completed by March 31. The issue was discussed at a meeting of relevant authorities at the Ministry of Labour in Bangkok on Friday, chaired by Labour Minister Police General Adul Sangsingkeo. Apart from discussing a plan on acquiring iris scanning devices to be used for the nationality verification process of the remaining 90,000 migrant workers in the Thai fishing and processed seafood sectors, out of about 200,000 of them, the participants, including those from the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives' Department of Fisheries and the Ministry of Public Health, also followed up the progress of the operation of one stop service centers (OSSCs) for labour. According to official statistics, there are remaining 1.3 million migrant workers, out of a total of two million, who need to come out for official registrations to legally stay or extend their legal stay in Thailand, the dateline of which has also been set on March 31, 2018.
