The Foreign Relations Committee of the US Senate has passed a resolution approving military action against Syria. The panel voted on Wednesday. The resolution says the action should exclude ground troops and not exceed 90 days. The resolution will now be sent to a plenary session of the Senate for voting. The ballot-casting there could be held next Monday. Deliberations are also underway at the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives. xxxxxx Russian President V.Putin has suggested that his country may resume selling anti-aircraft missile systems to Syria if western countries take military action against the nation without UN Security Council authorization. Russia has suspended the S-300 missile supply to Syria for now. Putin made the remarks in an interview with the Associated Press on Tuesday, ahead of the Group of 20 summit meeting to be held from Thursday in St. Petersburg. Referring to the allegations that chemical weapons were used in Syria, Putin said charges must be based on solid evidence, and not on rumors and intelligence reports based on eavesdropping. Asked whether Russia will support military action if there is evidence that chemical weapons were used, Putin said he would not rule out the possibility. He added that, according to current international law, only the United Nations Security Council can sanction the use of force against a sovereign state. Putin also suggested he is willing to discuss the issue at the G20 summit. xxxxxx Syria's deputy foreign minister declares defiance. Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister says his government will fight to the end against an attack on his country. Faisal Mekdad was speaking to the AFP news agency, in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Wednesday. Mekdad said the administration of president Bashar al-Assad will spare no measures to block any attack. Assad and other top government officials have spoken to the Western media recently in an attempt to counter the United States. Syria's state-run news agency says Prime Minister Wael al-Halki met with the ruling Baath Party. He asked the party to cooperate with the government in protecting the country's sovereignty and independence. xxxxxxx Samsung unveils Galaxy Gear smartwatch accessory. Samsung has unveiled a smartwatch with a colour screen that can show alerts, be used for voice calls and run apps. The Galaxy Gear had been highly anticipated since the firm is currently the world's bestselling smartphone maker and has beaten Microsoft, Apple and Google to unveil such a device. Samsung called it a "fashion icon". However, analysts warned that a decision to limit the watch to working as an accessory to other Galaxy Android devices might limit its appeal. Samsung has previously said growth in the sales of its handsets was slowing, so investors are eager to see if it can find another successful product. xxxxxxx Russian president Putin said Russia will not extradite former intelligence employee Edward Snowden back to the United States as the two countries do not have an agreement on mutual extradition of criminals. "The problem is not that we defended Snowden. We are not defending him in any way," Putin said in an interview with Channel 1 TV and the Associated Press ahead of a G20 summit in St. Petersburg. "The problem is that we and the United States do not have an agreement on mutual extradition of criminals," said the Russian president. He noted that Moscow had invited Washington on numerous occasions to conclude such an agreement "but have been denied." He added that Russia had not received and did not wish to obtain any secret information from Snowden.
