Japanese experts propose to mix dry sand with special reagents. With the help of this reagent, a fertile layer that preserves up to 70% of moisture is formed below the soil surface. This new technology does not obstruct air circulation inside the soil and thereby promotes growth of plants. Production of one ton of reagent is estimated at about 10 million yen ($ 100). Start of marketing of this technology is planned for 2016. It is expected to be in high demand in Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, where problems related to landscape greening and fight against desertification is particularly acute. xxxxxxx A postgraduate student of the Russian Kemerovo Technological Institute of Food Industry has won the "Start-2013" competitions by developing a packaging material made out of potato waste. In the first year it is planned to develop the process of creating a biopolymer mass out of potato waste, and in fact the peel of the potato will be needed for the manufacturing of the packaging material. An amount of 600 thousand rubles ($ 18,500 USD) has been allocated to the winners for the project. According to estimations, a total of 8 to 10 million rubles will be required for the project.
