Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa commemorated in Tehran

TEHRAN,Oct.19(MNA) -- Italian writer Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (1896-1957), famous for his only novel “The Leopard”, was commemorated by the Persian literary magazine Bokhara last week. The commemoration was one of the regular sessions the magazine holds to review works of Iranian and international literati. The session was held with the help the Embassy of Italy at the Pietro Della Valle Italian School in Tehran on last Monday. The Italian Cultural Attaché Carlo Cereti, literary critic Clara Corona, Iranian translators Antonia Shoraka and Nadia Moaveni and several other literati attended the meeting. Speaking at the session, Cereti said that Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa enjoys a high position in Italian literature for his passing from Italian classic literature to modern. Corona explained the structure of the short story “Lighea”, the last complete work by Giuseppe who wrote it a few months before his death and it was published after his death. Moaveni next talked about “The Leopard”, a novel that chronicles the changes in Sicilian life and society during the Risorgimento, and said that the author could not enjoy the fame the book brought for him during his life and that the book was published after his death in November 1958. “The Leopard” was quickly recognized as a great work of Italian literature. In 1959 Tomasi di Lampedusa was posthumously awarded the prestigious Strega Prize for the novel.
