Jakarta To Try Out New Traffic Management System Next Month

By Azeman Ariffin JAKARTA, June 29 (Bernama) -- The local government of the Special Capital Region of Jakarta is to start a trial run on July 20 of an 'odd-even' traffic system to ease congestion on the roads. Local media quoted Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama as saying that vehicles with an odd number as the last digit on the number plate would be allowed on major roads on odd dates and those with even number on even dates. If the trial run proves successful, the system will be enforced in August, the media reported. They said the system would replace the '3-in-1' system where vehicles carrying less than three people were disallowed into the city. This system was abolished last month. Jakarta, which is 3,225 sq km in area, has been listed among the 10 busiest cities of the world with a population exceeding 36 million and which houses the headquarters of federal government departments and almost all private company head offices. -- BERNAMA
