Japan, ASEAN Aim to Conclude Investment Pact by Year-End

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, Aug. 20 (Jiji Press)--Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations agreed on Tuesday to try to forge an investment pact by the end of this year. The agreement was reached at a meeting of Japanese economic minister Toshimitsu Motegi and his counterparts from ASEAN's 10 member countries in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. Japan and ASEAN began talks on their cooperation in the investment and services sectors in 2010 without setting a deadline. However, the ministers at the day's meeting set the time frame, given that Japan and ASEAN will hold a special summit meeting in Japan in December to mark the 40th anniversary of their friendship, people familiar with the matter said. The ministers also agreed to beef up the existing bilateral cooperation plans covering the period from the 2015 ASEAN economic integration through 2022. END
