Japan, China Researchers Propose Garbage Recycling

Beijing, Dec. 16 (Jiji Press)--Researchers from Japan and China on Tuesday announced a joint study report calling on the Chinese government to deal with a sharp increase in urban waste by encouraging garbage separation and recycling. In major cities in China, the average daily amount of waste per person exceeds one kilogram, a level seen in developed countries, as a result of rapid economic growth. While China is aiming to create a recycling-oriented society, efforts including garbage separation have been insufficient. Another headache is a sharp increase in scrap tires resulting from rapid motorization. In many cases, scrap tires are not properly disposed of, leading to environmental damage. The study began in 2010 as a joint project between the Japan International Cooperation Agency and China's National Development and Reform Commission. END
