Japan Crown Prince, Princess Attend Int'l Environment Meet

Tokyo, Oct. 18 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito and Princess Masako attended the opening ceremony of an international conference on the environment hosted by the Global Environmental Action in Tokyo Friday. The royal couple attended the conference's opening ceremony for the first time in 10 years. "I hope that there will be further progress in specific efforts for the development of a sustainable society," the Crown Prince said in an address, touching on the subject of global warming. The couple listened to a keynote speech by Lee Yuan-tseh, who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1986. For Crown Princess Masako, who has yet to overcome her health problems, the attendance at the environmental conference was the latest in a series of official duties since September, when she appeared on a stage in a ceremony for the first time in about four and a half years. On Saturday, she attended the opening ceremony of a sports festival for the disabled for the first time in a decade. END
