Japan to Ease Visa Requirements for Chinese from Jan. 19

Tokyo, Jan. 6 (Jiji Press)--Japan will ease requirements for issuing multiple-entry visas for Chinese people from Jan. 19, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Tuesday. At present, multiple-entry visas for tourists, for example, are issued to those who, during their first Japan visit, stay overnight or longer in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa or any of the three northeastern prefectures of Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures hit hardest by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. This requirement will be scrapped for Chinese who have significantly high incomes, the ministry said. Visa requirements for Chinese business travelers to Japan will also be relaxed, partially. Japan announced the plan to ease the visa requirements just before the meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping last November. The measure is designed to increase exchanges between the people of the two countries, which continue to have a strained political relationship, officials said. "We hope the step will help deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the foundation of bilateral relations," Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida told a press conference. END
