Japan to Enhance Antiterror Measures toward 2020 Olympics

Tokyo, Dec. 10 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government on Tuesday adopted a strategy aimed at beefing up security in the country toward the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2020. The strategy features steps against cyberattacks and terrorist attacks on such facilities as nuclear power stations. While stressing the importance of utilizing private-sector know-how, the strategy calls for a study on setting up a new body to share and analyze cybercrime information held by the public and private sectors, and the academic world. The new body will be modeled after a U.S. nonprofit organization with a similar role. The number of cybercrimes detected by the Japanese police in 2012 came to 7,334, nearly four-fold from 1,849 in 2003. To prevent terror attacks on nuclear plants, the strategy calls for beefing up the equipment of the police's special assault teams and implementing joint drills by the police, the Self-Defense Forces and power companies.
