Japan to Help Myanmar Improve Intellectual Property Protection

Tokyo, Feb. 26 (Jiji Press)--The government said Thursday that a Japan Patent Office official will be sent to Myanmar's Science and Technology Ministry next month to help the country set up a system to protect intellectual property. The official, who will stay in Myanmar for two years, will advise the ministry on establishing necessary legislation and provide expertise on creating and operating a government agency similar to the Japanese patent office. The move comes in response to concerns among Japanese companies considering doing business in Myanmar that technologies or designs held by them could be illegally copied because the country does not have an adequate system to protect intellectual property. This will be the first time for the Japanese government to provide comprehensive support to an emerging country for the establishment of such a system. If Japanese expertise is adopted in Myanmar, it will become easier for Japanese companies with patents, registered designs and trademarks in Japan to apply for patents in the Southeast Asian nation, government officials said.
