Japan, India to Spur Talks on SDF Seaplane Exports

Tokyo, March 30 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and his Indian counterpart, Manohar Parrikar, agreed Monday to accelerate talks between the two countries on exports of the US-2 rescue flying boat of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force to India. The ministers also agreed to study the possibility of joint development of defense equipment, including submarines, according to Japanese officials. During the talks at the Defense Ministry in Tokyo, Nakatani called for deepening defense cooperation between the two countries to ensure the rule of law at sea, in view of China's expansion in the South and East China Seas. In reply, Parrikar emphasized the importance of sea-lane defense. Nakatani also told Parrikar that Japan plans to let the MSDF join U.S.-India joint naval drills again this year. Earlier in the day, the Indian minister had a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. At the meeting, Abe stressed that Japan-India ties are crucial for peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region. END
