Japan Logs 1st Current Account Surplus in 5 Months in Feb.

Tokyo, April 8 (Jiji Press)--Japan logged a current account surplus of 612.7 billion yen in February, the first surplus in five months, the Ministry of Finance said Tuesday. The result came against the median forecast of 622.1 billion yen in surplus among 22 economic research institutes surveyed by Jiji Press. The February surplus was down 5.7 pct from a year before, the ministry said in a preliminary balance of payments report. Japan logged a goods and services trade deficit of 726.8 billion yen against the year-before deficit of 719.8 billion yen, the ministry said. In goods trade, Japan's deficit totaled 533.4 billion yen against 540.7 billion yen in deficit. Exports were up 15.7 pct at 5,941.1 billion yen, and imports were up 14.1 pct at 6,474.5 billion yen. Its surplus on the primary income account grew 3.6 pct to 1,459.3 billion yen. END
