Japan to Provide Aid to Help Chernobyl Victims

Moscow, July 10 (Jiji Press)--Japan signed an agreement in Kiev Thursday to provide Ukraine with 350 million yen in grant aid to support victims of the Chernobyl nuclear accident, Japanese embassy officials in Ukraine said. The money will be used to help hospitals and research institutes in Ukraine buy endoscopes and other medical equipment. The aid is the first in a series of up to 150 billion yen in financial assistance to Ukraine that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged at a summit of the Group of Seven major industrial nations in The Hague, the Netherlands, in March. Japan will support Ukraine as a G-7 member and friend of the country, Japanese Ambassador to Ukraine Toichi Sakata said at a signing ceremony. Pavlo Sheremeta, Ukrainian economic development and trade minister, praised the aid, saying it will help improve his country's medical capabilities. END
