Japan to Provide Displaced Iraqis with Relief Supplies

Tokyo, June 19 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government plans to offer humanitarian assistance to people in Iraq who have been displaced due to an armed conflict there, informed sources told Jiji Press on Thursday. Japan will provide such relief supplies as food, drugs and tents through the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The number of displaced Iraqis is estimated to have reached some 500,000. The Japanese government will decide details of its assistance after international organizations, such as the UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration, issue a joint statement to call for international support. Japan is also considering offering financial assistance to help reunions of separated families. In a statement issued Thursday, Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida strongly criticized militant attacks in Iraq. Japan will continue to support the Iraqi government's fight against terrorism, Kishida said, expressing hopes that Iraqi people will work together to settle the situation. END
