Japan Warns against U.S. Auto Tariffs

Tokyo, June 29 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government warned Friday that proposed U.S. tariffs on vehicle and auto parts imports could have a destructive impact on the U.S. and the global economy. The tariffs could have a serious impact on U.S. jobs, the government said in a letter to the U.S. Commerce Department. Japanese automakers have created over 1.5 million jobs in the United States, the letter said. A broad trade restrictive measure based on national security grounds raises strong questions in terms of consistency with World Trade Organization rules, the government said. It said U.S.-bound exports of Japanese vehicles and auto parts have never posed national security threats. Japan did not respond when the United States last year sought public comments on steel and aluminum tariffs. The latest letter signaled a strong sense of crisis by a country where automotive is a leading sector. END
