Kahramaa and SC Launch T22 Schools Programme to Save Energy

Doha, February 17 (QNA) - Two key local entities took Qatar's energy conservation drive a step forward by launching a new schools' programme here Tuesday. Senior executives from Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa), and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), announced at a media conference the T22 Programme. T22 targets primary school level students (ages 6-12), staff and teachers, and parents and families. The programme aims to spread messages of conserving energy to school students in Qatar. It will also spread awareness and engage Qatars youth on energy conservation by using the power of football, officials said. Commenting on the programme, Kahramaa President Engineer Essa bin Hilal AlKuwari said, "The T22 Programme blends the right mixture of education and fun. These are building blocks for long-term conservation through behavioural change. "Children will find the materials engaging, and learn that energy efficiency is critical to their future, Qatars future. Schools will receive valuable upgrades to their meters, lighting, and faucets to track and conserve energy." He described the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy as "an excellent partner" towards this objective. SC Secretary General Hassan Al Thawadi said, "Legacy, innovation, and sustainability have always been at the forefront of our thinking since we bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. "We are pleased to play a role in this important programme by bringing the spirit of football and sport to T22. Sport plays a key role in building a more sustainable community, which makes it a perfect fit for this effort." School students will receive conservation and energy efficiency curriculum as well as sports that teach and reinforce this behaviour at school and into their respective homes. Students will have access to materials that teach about conservation and how their behaviour impact water and electricity use. They will also engage in fun events, including visits by football stars from the Qatar Stars League. The mascot of T22 is Spark, an animated figure who represents the spirit of fun the programme brings to the topic of energy conservation. An energy audit of all 22 schools is underway. It will identify conservation and efficiency opportunities via retrofit of lights with dimmable LED lamps and lux controllers, presence detector controllers for meeting rooms, toilets with delay timing and water efficient aerators on faucets. The above will lead to energy savings in each of the schools for the long term, officials said. T22 will culminate in an awards event recognizing the schools that have best achieved the performance targets set for the programme based on Kahramaa readings of the meters installed in the schools to check energy consumption.
