Kazakh traditions and customs

Almaty, March 24, 2010 (Khabar) - A theatrical feast has gathered foreign guests which are known be the members of the Almaty International Women’s Club, who have long been interested in Kazakh culture, customs and traditions. A “Bridal farewell ceremony” is the most touching Kazakh wedding rite.

Agustina Gardi, member of Almaty International Women’s Club, Argentina:
- Everything is very touching and beautiful. It is very interesting and unusual for us, Latin-Americans. I liked the bridal gown, music and songs. You will never hear or see anything like that anywhere else.

The performance was prepared by students of the Zhurgenov Academy of Art. Zarina Karmenova is an aspiring actress. She played the bride’s part.

Zarina Karmenova, actress:
- Every little girl dreams of a beautiful dress and beautiful fairytale. But I think it’s better to wear this nice saukele and this beautiful dress to walk with pride for being Kazakh rather than getting married in a gorgeous European dress.

The bride’s face is covered with a wedding veil. However, guests may see her by paying “korimdik” or a payment for looking at the bride’s face. This is followed by “Betashar”. The rite symbolizes the two loving hearts getting united as two strings on the dombra cannot produce music without one another as well. Candies are then thrown over the newlyweds for good luck which is called “shashu”.

Soumiya Radzhagopalan, member of Almaty International Women’s Club:
- I think it’s excellent. I really liked it because the dance is very good. The coordination and everything is very pleasing and it’s very nice.

The performance ended with songs and dance acts.
