Kendari Being Hit By Worst Flood

Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, July 16 (Antara) - Kendari is being hit by the worst flood in the city`s history as the whole city has been inundated over the last two weeks, according to Southeast Sulawesi Governor Nur Alam. The flood water reaching a height of between one and three meters has been inundating nearly the whole city particularly in the lowland areas, the governor said here on Tuesday after visiting the flood-affected areas. The authorities have helped evacuate a number of flood victims, he said. The evacuation team consists of members of the Kendari Search and Rescue (SAR) team, the local military and police. Among the worst-hit ares are Kota Lama, Mendong, Andonohum Barua and Wuawua market where the flood water reaching a height of up to more than three meters. The flash floods triggered by incessant heavy rains, have inundated several residential areas in Kendari. Mandonga River overflowed and submerged tens of houses located near the river bank, Saharuddin, a resident of Mandonga Village, said here on Tuesday. Fepabri housing complex located in Wundudopi Village, Baruga Sub District, Kendari City, was also flooded at a height of up to one`s knee. "Two years ago, tens of houses were also flooded. We are now worried that the flood water will continue to rise as the rain is still falling," Abdul Azis, a resident of Wundudopi, said.
