Kenya Impressed With Indonesian Family Hope Program

Jakarta, April 17 (Antara) - Kenya National Social Security Fund delegations is impressed with the implementation of Family Hope Program, PKH that has successfully addressed the problem of poverty. "We are very impressed with this program and we will follow the implementation," assured Kenya Delegation Chairman Adan Mohammad here on Thursday. Kenya NSSF delegation met with the PKH team from the Director of Social Security of Ministry of Social Affairs. The delegation was briefed about the program implementation that has been ongoing since 2007. According to Adan Mohammed, this program implementation is very good because it focuses on health and education, while in Kenya a similar program has been implemented to only provide unconditional support for orphans and displaced elderly. Family Hope Program is a conditional aid for poor families with children and pregnant women, where the children are made to go to school and pregnant women are helped with pregnancy tests in the clinic. If they did not follow the obligation, the aid will be reduced. This program is intended to cut the poverty chain and change people`s mindset in order to avoid passing down poverty onto their children. Currently, this program has participation from 3.2 million very poor households across 33 provinces, while in Kenya the similar program has reached 500 thousand poor people. The program in Kenya has been running for a year and thus, Adan feels Kenya can learn from the Family Hope Program in Indonesia. "Since this program has been successfully held in Indonesia, we will set it as an example for the implementation in our country," Adan pointed out.
