Key U.S. Warship to Hiroshima A-Bombing Found Deep in Sea

Washington, Aug. 19 (Jiji Press)--A team led by Paul Allen, cofounder of Microsoft Corp., said Saturday it has found part of a U.S. World War II ship that was sunk by a Japanese submarine after delivering components of an atomic bomb. The wreckage of the USS Indianapolis with some 1,200 crew members on board was discovered in the Philippine Sea at a depth of 5,500 meters, the team said. The heavy cruiser completed its secret mission to deliver the parts of an atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima to Tinian Island on July 26, 1945. Four days later, it was torpedoed by a Japanese Imperial Navy submarine and submerged. According to the U.S. Navy, some 800 crew members survived the sinking but only about 300 of them were rescued alive five days later because many died of thirst, drowned or were attacked by sharks. "While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming," Allen said in a statement.
