King Grants Full Pardon, Immediate Freedom To Anwar Ibrahim

KUALA LUMPUR, May 16 (Bernama) – Malaysia's King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V today consented to grant a full pardon as well as immediate freedom to jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim. In a statement issued by Istana Negara, Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Pengelola Bijaya Diraja Wan Ahmad Dahlan Ab Aziz said Anwar’s appeal for a full pardon was tabled and considered at the 51st meeting Wednesday of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to grant a full pardon and immediate freedom to Anwar following the advice of the Pardons Board in accordance with Article 42 of the Federal Constitution, the statement said. Anwar, 71, was serving a five-year jail sentence at the Sungai Buloh Prison from February 2015 after he was convicted of sodomy. He was originally scheduled to be released on June 8.
