Kuala Lumpur To Host 17th AICHR Meeting From Feb 11 To 14

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- The 17th Meeting of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) will be held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, here from Feb 11 to 14. The Foreign Ministry in a statement here Tuesday said this meeting was the first in a series of meetings of the AICHR under Malaysia’s Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2015. Malaysia's representative to AICHR, Dr Muhammad Shafee Abdullah will be chairing the meeting that would be attended by AICHR representatives and assistants of the other ASEAN Member States as well as representatives from the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta. Building on the achievements in 2014 under the chairmanship of Myanmar, AICHR will continue its deliberations on a number of issues, including the implementation of the AICHR Priority Programmes and Activities for 2014 until 2015. This Meeting would also provide an opportunity for the AICHR Representatives to discuss and exchange views on human rights issues in ASEAN. Malaysia in this regard would be sharing its views on the draft of AICHR’s Five-Year Work Plan (2016-2020) and AICHR’s input on ASEAN Community’s Post-2015 Vision and its Attendant Documents, among others. Malaysia will also launch the AICHR-Malaysia National Website during the Welcoming Dinner on Feb 11, 2015. The development of this website is timely in that it aims to provide information and update on AICHR activities in Malaysia to the general public and also aimed at increasing public awareness on human rights issues in Malaysia. -- BERNAMA
