Labour minister receives UNDP's resident coordinator

Manama, Feb. 8 (BNA): Labour and Social Development Minister Jameel bin Mohammed Ali Humaidan on Sunday received the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)'s Resident Representative/Resident Coordinator, Peter Grohmann, in the presence of UNDP's advisor Jan-Jilles van der Hoeven and several officials to discuss the bilateral ties and ways of further bolstering the technical cooperation. The minister welcomed the UNDP cooperation efforts with various governmental institutions to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs), citing the kingdom's successful experience in addressing joblessness and the protection of workers, as well as the creation of an integrated setup for community protection, including social security, supporting needy families and the provision of government assistance, unemployment insurance benefits to ensure dignified livelihood to the citizens. The minister stressed the importance of overcoming any challenges in the upcoming period to maintain the accomplishments in view of economic challenges. The minister cited the persistent efforts being exerted to uplift the economic status of needy families and to change their status from recipients of government assistance to self-reliant producers. The minister also cited the implementation of the three-pronged national strategy concerning children, the elderly and the handicapped as part of a series of the ministry's priorities in view of its importance to uplift the status of the less fortunate members of the community. The UN/UNDP's RR/RC, Peter Grohmann, praised the ongoing bilateral cooperation in various fields pertaining to labour and community development at various levels. He thanked the Kingdom of Bahrain and its governmental agencies for their remarkable attentiveness to achieving the 2030-agenda for sustainable development in the upcoming period.
